Designing a Sustainable Future: Innovations in Western Canada 🌱♻️

Updated: Dec 11, 2024

Western Canada faces rising temperatures, frequent wildfires, and declining biodiversity. The region has been profoundly affected by climate change: devastating floods in Vancouver, unprecedented 100-year storms in Alberta, the heartbreaking destruction of parts of Jasper by wildfire, and water restrictions due to prolonged droughts. Winters bring less snow, affecting not only recreation but also crucial water supplies.

We can learn more about these environmental challenges from Canada's Climate Action Initiatives, and no doubt , you have been affected personally. These challenges demand sustainable architecture and urban development that balances growth with environmental preservation.

What's Real when it comes to Sustainable Design?

Highlighting the importance of moving beyond superficial 'greenwashing' is essential.

Designers and decision-makers must critically assess whether a product’s environmental claims hold up to scrutiny through measurable certifications, transparency, and tangible impact. Net-zero goals by "some distant date", for example, often lack the immediate, actionable steps necessary to achieve meaningful change. These promises can mislead stakeholders into believing that long-term targets equate to real progress today. Similarly, claims of using recycled content might sound compelling but fall short if the materials are not part of a closed-loop system that ensures true circularity.

Marketing ploys without substance, such as ambiguous "eco-friendly" labels or products boasting minimal improvements, fail to deliver real value. Instead, it’s crucial to evaluate a product’s full lifecycle—from raw material extraction to end-of-life management.

By focusing on these efforts, the design community can ensure its contributions genuinely benefit both the planet and the people who inhabit it.

The Business Case for Sustainability 🌎⚡️

Sustainability benefits both the planet and businesses. Research shows most consumers value eco-friendly practices. By using sustainable building materials that improve air quality and align with client values, businesses can enhance their brand while also reducing costs through energy efficiency.

This is a must read article from Harvard Business Review that highlights how a strong sustainability focused strategy can be a major competitive advantage.

🌎An Unapologetic Plug for Carta🌿:)

Supporting products such as the Catifa Carta - especially when considering the innovative end-of-life management using pyrolysis to create biochar, it is easy to see how intentional choices can redefine sustainability benchmarks. (the Carta, by the way, can sequester just about 2 kilos of Carbon Dioxide PER SHELL because of this method - permanently!)

At BrassTacks Design Source, we embrace sustainability as a core value, guiding our efforts to support and advocate for sustainable design. A Call to Action - We CAN make a difference 🌿❤️

I know this conversation is exhausting, daunting and often we wonder: "Yeah but what can I do about it? I am just one person!"

The good news? YOU have more influence than almost any other profession in shaping our communities. Each material you specify, each sustainable solution you propose, has the potential to transform not only the spaces we inhabit but also the world we leave for future generations. You are not just designing buildings—you are building legacies.

By setting high standards in RFPs, prioritizing measurable sustainability metrics, and embracing green building practices, you can drive change at a scale that matters. Designers have the power to ensure that beauty, function, and sustainability coexist seamlessly.

That said, let’s not let perfection stand in the way of progress. Even small improvements over the status quo can drive meaningful change.

By leading with intention, we can position Western Canada as a shining example of sustainable innovation in our designed spaces. Together, we have the power to inspire communities, influence industries, and shape a more resilient and thriving world. ❤️
